The company has a very interesting history to share. It was founded in 1932 by Arthur Taubman. A man of humble beginnings, Taubman heard of Advance Stores, a 3-store chain in Roanoke, Virginia, that was for sale. At the urging of his wife, he pawned jewelry, (including her wedding ring), to make the down payment to buy it.
